L’impact de la supervision bancaire sur la stabilité des banques

Hassan OBEID, Faten Ben Bouheni, Elena Margarint

Empirical studies of the impact of supervision on the stability of the banking sector are mixed, varying according to the particular characteristics of the bank and, in addition, the policy of the country where the banks operate. This research examines the effects of banking supervision on the stability of Moldova’s banking sector - a small and very open economy, vulnerable to external shocks. Based on a sample of all banks in the Moldovan banking sector, for a period from 2000 to 2017, the empirical analysis reported the following results : the tightening of restrictions on bank activities increases the stability of the banking sector. On the other hand, the power of the supervisory authority has a negative impact on the stability of Moldovan banks. Increasing the level of capital strengthens the stability of Moldovan banks and, at the same time, reduces risk taking. Thus, capital regulations, representing an important pillar of banking sector policy around the world, are also important in the case of Moldovan banking sector.
